Privacy policy

Account information. When you sign in with Google or with email and password, we receive your name, email address and a unique account ID from our sign-in provider (Google Firebase Authentication). If you use email sign-in, your password is handled by Firebase and we never see it.

Family tree content. The information you and other members add to a tree: tree names, the names of people in the tree, birth years, notes, and how people are related. This can include information about relatives who do not have an account. Please only add information you are comfortable sharing with the other members of your tree.

Membership and layout. Which trees you belong to, your role (owner or editor), and where you have placed people on the canvas.

Device and usage information. Like most websites, our hosting and advertising providers automatically receive technical information such as your IP address, browser type, device type and the pages you visit.

• To sign you in and keep your account secure.
• To store your family trees and show them to the members of each tree.
• To show other members of a tree your name and email address, so they know who has joined.
• To run, maintain and improve the website.
• To show advertising, which keeps Tree Together free.

We do not sell your personal information.

A family tree can be seen and edited by the people who have joined it with its join code. Anyone who has the code can join, so only share it with people you trust. The owner of a tree can generate a new join code at any time. Trees are not published on the public website.

We use Google AdSense to show ads. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website and other websites.

Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this and/or other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, we will ask for your consent before personalised ads are shown, and you can change your choice at any time.

We also use your browser’s local storage and cookies set by Firebase to keep you signed in and to remember small preferences, such as whether you have seen the “How it works” guide.

We rely on trusted providers to run Tree Together:

• Google Firebase: sign-in and database storage (privacy information).
• Vercel: website hosting (privacy policy).
• Google AdSense: advertising (privacy policy).

These providers may process your information in countries outside your own, including the United States.

We keep your information for as long as your account or trees exist. The owner of a tree can delete it at any time, which permanently removes everyone in it and its membership records. To delete your account, or to have information about you removed from a tree you don’t control, email us at admin@silentmonkey.co.nz.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal information, or to object to or restrict how we use it. To make a request, contact us at admin@silentmonkey.co.nz. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Tree Together is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them for an account. Family trees may include the names of children added by adult family members.

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date above.
